Don Hummer Trucking sponsored the Wave with Wyatt Benefit Ride.
Many people may already know of the famous Iowa Wave which began in 2017. This is when the 70,000-plus fans, teams, and coaches at Kinnick Stadium turn toward the adjacent University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital to wave to the children and their families. Due to a photograph of this tradition appearing in local media outlets, Wyatt has become sort of an unofficial face of the Iowa Wave.
Wyatt is being treated at the hospital for Hyper IgM syndrome, an immunodeficiency disorder which leads to an increased susceptibility to infections. He is preparing to undergo a second bone marrow transplant after the first attempt was unsuccessful. Aside from being a brave little fighter, Wyatt is also the grandson of our Safety and Training Manager, Greg Edwards. When presented the opportunity to help the family, we were more than happy to assist in any way we could.
On Saturday, July 14, nearly 140 motorcycles and a handful of cars turned out to raise funds for Wyatt’s journey ahead. With the help of the Teufelhund Veterans Group, the sizable ride went smoothly. Thanks to the group’s detailed planning and efforts, the ride was safe and enjoyable for all the participants. While the ride may be over, the family’s long struggle is still ahead of them. Anyone interested in helping the family or finding out more can visit their GoFundMe page.
