Safety and Health Conference

Posted on February 27, 2017 at 10:45 AM by Blog Committee

On Thursday, Greg Edwards and I attended the 2017 East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference at Kirkwood Community College. The first keynote speaker was Garrison Wynn – and he gave a message entitled “What the Most Successful Safety Leaders Do Differently”. He gave a hilarious spin on why employees trust their managers and how the different generations can come together to achieve their goals. One of the most memorable things he said was “Clarity: it doesn’t matter how smart you are if no one can understand you.”

If you’d like to learn more about Garrison Wynn and his philosophies on leading you can check out his two books:

The Real Truth and The Cowbell Principal – both are top sellers on Amazon!

Throughout the day we had mini sessions and we got to pick which classes to attend. The three that I chose were:

  • Accident Investigation to Prevent Future Accidents
  • Supervisor Safety Leadership
  • Making Safety Personal

To wrap things up, our last keynote speaker was Justin Ganschow. He was tasked by Caterpillar to decrease the amount of work comp claims in one of their facilities.  He gave a presentation on the steps he took to achieve this goal. He really got the employees involved and they were the ones who came up with a plan. This helped get the buy-in from the other employees and within 3 years, they had decreased their work comp claims by a tremendous amount.

Overall, it was a great conference and I am so thankful that I was able to participate. I’m already looking forward to next year.
