Don Hummer Trucking recently hired a Claims Processing Specialist: Akeyla Choate. She joined the company in November of 2015.
"I grew up on a small farm just south of Kalona, Iowa. I have an older brother, a twin brother and two step sisters. I come from a huge family - my grandparents were previously Amish so as you can imagine, I have a lot of relatives. They left the Amish community when they were younger, so I never had too much interaction with that part of their lives. Growing up, I went to Mid-Prairie Community School District in Kalona and Wellman. The hardest part about high school was trying to share a car with my twin brother. It caused a lot of sibling rivalry.
After high school I attended the U of I as an art major. I did that for a while before I realized that I didn’t want to teach art and there weren’t a lot of other options. I then switched to a business major and am very happy with that decision. During that mess of trying to figure out what to do with my schooling/career, I moved to Maui and lived with a friend for 6 months. I was essentially a beach bum, and it was possibly the best 6 months of my life. Reluctantly, I came back to Iowa to finish my business degree.
My previous job was at GEICO, where I was a Sales Supervisor. This consisted of supervising a team of 8 to 9 sales agents who took inbound sales calls. I dealt with HR issues, angry customers, CC transactions, insurance fraud, and claims. It was great, except for the unusual work hours, which is how I ended up here at Hummer. I’ve only been here a few months, but it feels like it’s been much longer. I’m really enjoying being a part of the Safety team. If you ever have questions about personal auto insurance, feel free to holler at me!"
