As a professional driver, there are many parts of your job. One of the most important is managing the speed of your vehicle to control the space around it. A safe attitude, along with being focused on the task of safe driving, is critical to success in the area of speed and space management. Speed and space management is one of the most fundamental tasks to prevent crashes. Driving too fast for conditions, tailgating, or failing to yield the right-of-way are just a few examples of poor driving behaviors that can lead to a serious crash.
Professional drivers are aware of changing traffic, road, and weather conditions. Professional drivers also compensate for the actions and mistakes of other drivers to avoid crashes. Remember to:
- Maintain a 7 second following distance
- Yield the right-of-way
- Use caution when turning or changing lanes
- Signal in advance of any lane change or move
