Best Tips for Field Tests on Tractor/Trailer

Posted on May 2, 2015 at 1:51 PM by Dena Boelter

What are the best methods to check your lights in the field?  Here are some tips:

Daytime Running Lights - These lights go off when you set the brakes.   With a trailer hooked (and only after checking that the trailer brakes hold well), park on a level surface and release the tractor brakes but leave the trailer parking brakes set.  With the truck running, the daytime running lights should operate.

Backup Lights - Set all parking brakes, place unit in reverse, and shut the truck off.   Place the key in the “run” position.

Brake Lights - With a trailer hooked and the parking brakes set, you will need an object to hold the foot (treadle) valve (brake pedal) down for both units.  Another option is to pull the hand valve down for the trailer only.

Loose Suspension Bushings on Trailer -   Rock the trailer as if you were sliding the tandems (trailer parking brakes applied) with a second person watching the bushings/arms.
